About Joint Chiefs of Staff
The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) is the body of senior uniformed leaders in the United States Department of Defense who advise the President, the Secretary of Defense, and the National Security Council on military matters. The JCS provides strategic military guidance, inter-service coordination, and planning support; it does not exercise operational command of combat forces, which is vested in the Combatant Commands. The Joint Chiefs include the Chairman, the Vice Chairman, and the service chiefs from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Space Force, and the Chief of the National Guard Bureau. The JCS is part of the U.S. federal government and performs advisory, planning, and coordination functions for national defense and military policy.
